Thank you to all the players and coaches for an excellent 2018 Angels Tryout Camp. We as coaches challenged ourselves to run an efficient and active tryout camp that didn't sacrifice skill development during the evaluation process. Our coaches did an excellent job executing that objective.
We also wanted to flip our perspective on evaluation and team placement. We didn't want to look at it from the age old standpoint of "how can this player help a certain team?" We wanted to evaluate the player and determine what team would maximize his or her development. I witnessed the coaches at each level apply this tactic and it allowed us to make very confident picks with the players.
Inevitably though, there will be players and families that disagree with our opinions and we as coaches accept that. Challenge yourself to look long term and understand that development happens at all levels of hockey. We all have seen the career B player that flourishes in High School or the kid that plays A hockey for 6 years move on from the sport when he is a junior. It comes down to the player and their commitment to improvement through hard work and character development. It also comes down to the support and encouragement they receive at home.
Regardless of what team you or your child are placed on, challenge yourself to raise the bar. Challenge yourself or your child to prove people wrong. The work doesn't stop because of what team you made.
Best of luck to all the teams this year and have fun. Go Angels!
